There is an interesting article about this at http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/49. It says there are two different type of smiles. One is more automatic and one is more purposeful. It says that even fetuses smile, yet feral children, raised in the wild, do not smile. It doesn't reach any real conclusion, but it is interesting to read.

the smile has evolved with our ancestors
in chimpanzees smile declares that the individual by showing his/her tooth is vonerable thereby coming peacfully, so if you extend that idea you may understand how it evolved and what it means...

In my own experience, smiling is one of the best way of conveying happiness and gladness. Of course, there are often time we smile because we want to tease someone but I do believe that smiling is the best way to let go of the stress and avoiding depression. We should live life to the fullest and always keep on the positive side. There are times we are feeling down, that we cry so hard but I tell you at the end you'll learn to smile, again for many reasons.

This is cultural. As young children we notice faces and mimic what we see. When people are happy with us they smile, so we try to do the same. In time we learn that smiling indicates happiness so we use it to show others how we feel. Thanks for sharing.
